Russian President Vladimir Putin described the strikes an "act of aggression" and had the "destructive influence on the entire system of worldwide relations and will exacerbate humanitarian catastrophe in Syria".

"Vladimir Putin, in particular, stressed that if such actions committed in violation of the U.N. Charter continue, then it will inevitably lead to chaos in worldwide relations", the Kremlin statement said.

Ryabkov further noted that these were the consequences of the United States airstrikes in Syria that hampered the efforts of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to probe the alleged attack in Douma.

"Open source accounts allege a barrel bomb was used to deliver the chemicals, and a regime helicopter was seen above Douma on the evening of 7 April".

The U.S. Department of Defense released video footage of tomahawk missiles being launched from a submarine in the Mediterranean Sea at targets in Syria as part of a "multi-national strike operation against the Syrian government".

The bombings marked the biggest intervention by Western countries against Assad and ally Russian Federation.

Pentagon officials on Saturday said they "assessed" that there were probably both chemical and nerve agents in the targets US forces hit with missile strikes, but added that they had "successfully mitigated" against this in the way they attacked them.

The Assad government denies that it used chemical weapons.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, the regime's top ally, warned that fresh strikes would spark "chaos", but Washington vowed economic sanctions against Moscow rather than further military action.

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad met overnight with representatives of the worldwide chemical weapons watchdog at a Damascus hotel.

Worldwide officials are working to try to confirm the suspected poison gas attack on Douma. Moscow condemned the Western states for refusing to wait for the OPCW's findings before attacking.

U.S. President Donald Trump lauded the "perfectly executed" strike, the biggest global attack on President Bashar Assad's regime during Syria's seven-year war, but both Damascus and Syria's opposition rubbished its impact.

The limited scope of the strikes and the fact that Damascus had time to remove key assets thanks to prior warning given by the West to Syria regime ally Russian Federation, also drew sceptical comments from analysts.

The leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah said on Sunday that Western strikes on Syria had failed to achieve anything, including terrorizing the army, helping insurgents or serving the interests of Israel. "No other group could have carried out this attack", Wilson said.

The heavily armed, Iranian-backed Shi'ite Hezbollah movement, which fights alongside the Syrian army and is represented in the Beirut government, has been a vital ally of Damascus in Syria's seven-year war.

US, French and British missiles destroyed sites suspected of hosting chemical weapons development and storage facilities Saturday, in a move lauded by President Donald Trump as "perfectly executed" - although the buildings were mostly empty and both Damascus and Syria's opposition rubbished its impact.

British Foreign Secretary (Minister) Boris Johnson defended Prime Minister Theresa May's decision to take part in the attack, saying it was to deter further use of chemical weapons.

"Russia confirms its commitment to ensure [safety] and security of the mission and will not interfere in its work", the Russian embassy in the Netherlands said on Monday.
