Theresa May Urges Nigeria To End Laws Against Same-Sex Marriages

He added: "I feel with the Commonwealth, we can really help push some of the other nations to relax their laws on anti-gay stuff".

Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday said Britain "deeply regrets" introducing laws that criminalised same-sex relations in India and elsewhere in the former British Empire, but did not tender an apology as demanded by campaigners.

The premier raised discriminatory legislation affecting same-sex couples, women and girls, in an address to Commonwealth leaders in London.

Speaking at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), the Prime Minister said the United Kingdom would support any Commonwealth nation seeking to reform "outdated" legislation.

At a Commonwealth meeting, Mrs May said laws were "wrong then and wrong now". Activists launched a petition calling for Britain to apologize for colonial-era laws which outlawed and in some cases, imposed the death penalty, for same-sex activity in 37 of the 53 member nations, on Monday.

"The prime minister's regret for Britain's imposition of anti-gay laws valuably reframes the LGBT issue in a way that it is likely to provoke less hostility in Commonwealth countries", The Guardian reports.

"As a family of nations we must respect one another's cultures and traditions but we must do so in a manner consistent with our common value of equality - a value that is clearly stated in the Commonwealth Charter". "We have a responsibility to ensure that every LGBT+ person in the Commonwealth is afforded the equality and civil rights they deserve, particularly when so many of their diaspora now call London their home", she said.

"Nobody should face discrimination and persecution because of who they are or who they love", said the leader during the meeting. "Nobody should face persecution or discrimination because of who they are or who they love".

In January 2017, President Buhari signed the bill criminalizing all forms of sex same relationships in Nigeria. Strict anti-gay laws remain in place in countries like Nigeria, Uganda, Malawi and elsewhere across the continent.
