'Windrush generation' row deepens as May rules out summit

But the officials were told that a face-to-face with Theresa May "would not be possible".

It has seen some Windrush generation residents, who might never have applied for United Kingdom passports, left without the documentation now required by officials. Tens of thousands who arrived as children from the Caribbean are said to have been "treated like criminals".

The Labour MP has secured an urgent question about the immigration status of Windrush generation children in the House of Commons this afternoon.

Barbados high commissioner to the UK, Guy Hewitt, claimed he had initially been told the Prime Minister's schedule was "full" this week.

Hundreds of thousands of people who arrived in the United Kingdom from Commonwealth countries in the 1950s and 1960s, and were given indefinite leave to remain in 1971 - but the Home Office did not issue paperwork at the time.

This has meant that people who are now either pensioners or are approaching that age, and who have spent their working lives paying taxes in the United Kingdom and often working in public services such as the National Health Service or in the general infrastructure of the country, raising children who are legally resident, are now facing uncertainty.

Tough new rules were introduced four years ago to weed out illegal immigrants and prevent them renting a home, working, opening a bank account and holding a driving licence.

Under the 1971 Immigration Act, all Commonwealth citizens already living in the United Kingdom were given indefinite leave to remain - but the right to free movement between Commonwealth nations was ended from that date onwards.

Ms Nokes even appeared to confirm reports some Windrush generation residents have been wrongly removed from the country.

We are calling for a lower burden of proof for those who arrived here before 1971, and more flexibility shown to those who have lived here and paid taxes for several decades but were never naturalised.

The changes to the immigration rules could be a major headache for Mrs May, for it was under her stewardship of the Home Office, the British government department that oversees the immigration system, that the decision was taken to make the United Kingdom a "hostile environment" for illegal immigrants. The former minister, whose Guyanese parents were Windrush migrants, added: 'It is a stain on our nation's conscience and the Home Secretary and Prime Minister must act urgently to right this historic wrong.

"The Windrush generation must have their rights as British citizens confirmed, any who have been deported must be invited back to the United Kingdom immediately and those who oversaw their deportations must be held to account".

The Home Office said delegates at this week's Commonwealth heads of government meeting in London will be able to speak to Mrs May about the situation. A spokesman added that there was "no intention" of making people who have the right to remain here leave.
