19 dead, 39 infected in Congo Ebola outbreak

Forty-two cases of the Ebola virus has been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the present outbreak, according to the country's Ministry of Public Health.

Earlier last week, World Health Organization (WHO) reported 32 suspected, probable or confirmed cases of the disease in Congo since April 4, including 18 deaths while a new suspected case was reported on Friday.

It said 393 people who identified as contacts of Ebola patients were being followed up.

In an interview with The New Times on Monday, Dr. Diane Gashumba, the Minister for Health said no signs of Ebola have so far been detected on Rwandan soil and that the ministry is working with different stakeholders to ensure citizens are protected from the outbreak.

The vaccine was developed by the Canadian government and is now licensed to the US -based Merck. It must be kept at -60 to -80 degrees Celsius (-76°F to -112°F), creating huge logistical challenges. It was tested in West - Africa in 2015 during an Ebola epidemic that killed more than 11,300 people in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Ilunga, who disclosed that the introduction of Vaccination by the government was an option open to curtail the epidemic, added that all people with confirmed or suspected EVD would be moved to the Ebola treatment centres as soon as the facilities were ready.

Tedros traveled to Congo over the weekend and flew to the remote area, still only accessible by motorbike or helicopter, where the deadly hemorrhagic disease has broken out. "If a general can not be with its troops in the front line it's not a general", he said. "And if there is risk, my life is not better than anyone".

That much was released in a statement by the world body which also revealed that information about the outbreak in Bikoro, Iboko and Wangata health zones in Equateur province was still limited.
