Alexander Downer's secret meeting with Federal Bureau of Investigation led to Trump-Russia inquiry

That discussion at London's Kensington Wine Rooms, when Mr Trump was running in Republican Party primary, led to Mr Downer being interviewed by two Federal Bureau of Investigation agents in London in August 2016.

In December past year it was reported that former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos told Australian diplomat Alexander Downer that Russian Federation had political dirt on Hillary Clinton.

He said he was not anxious that the revelation may damage his relationship with Trump because Australia's relationship with the United States was "in excellent shape". "Days after they closed their investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server, agents began scrutinizing the campaign of her Republican rival", writes the Times.

It was a breach of diplomatic protocol - which came after "tense deliberations" between Washington and Canberra - that helped to lay the foundations for the special counsel investigation into allegations of collusion between Donald Trump's campaign and Russian Federation, according to the New York Times.

Downer reportedly notified USA intelligence officials of his run in with Papadopoulos after the emails, which contained damaging information about Trump's former opponent Hillary ClintonHillary Diane Rodham ClintonOregon governor to face state rep in November Progressive pick Wild wins Dem primary for Pa. Mr Trump has repeatedly slammed the probe as a witch hunt.

The FBI, in an attempt to prevent leaks, kept details about what would later evolve into special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation from Justice Department political appointees.

The FBI codenamed their probe Crossfire Hurricane, a reference to lyrics in a Rolling Stones song. According to the story, what was then known as "Crossfire Hurricane" amongst the handful of agents involved, began months before election day.

Hillary Clinton, who won the popular vote in the presidential election only to lose the electoral college count, this year used a series of media interviews with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation to accuse the Trump campaign of colluding with Russian Federation to discredit her in key swing states with false news stories on Facebook.
