Amazon feels squeeze as Google and Apple make gains — Echo smart speaker

Amazon shipped a whopping 4 million smart speakers during the first quarter of 2018, but rising competition from the likes of Google and Apple has cut its global smart speaker share almost in half when compared with the same period past year, according to Strategy Analytics. All three did not have a smart speaker to ship the previous year. The data shows that Apple shipped just over half a million HomePods during the quarter, locking in less than 10 percent in terms of marketshare... The company had an awesome 709% year-over-year improvement in first quarter shipments to 2.4 million units from the 300,000 it delivered during 2017's first three months.

Strategy Analytics' data indicates that Amazon had 43.6 percent of the market in the first quarter down from 81.8 percent a year earlier with Google in second place with 26.5 percent, up from 12.4 percent a year ago. The third and fourth position is held by Alibaba and Apple respectively.

The smart speaker market reached 9.2 million units shipped during the first quarter of 2018, with Amazon accounting for 4 million of those shipments. Alibaba and Xiaomi are the leaders there, with their strong showing in the domestic market alone enabling them to push into the global top five, Watkins said. David Mercer, Vice President at Strategy Analytics added, "Today's smart speakers are by no means the finished article but they have captured the consumer imagination and we will see rapid evolution in design, functionality and associated use cases over the coming years".

Strategy Analytics' today released its latest smart speaker report, "Global Smart Speaker Vendor & OS Shipment and Installed Base Market Share by Region: Q1 2018", which provides a detailed quarterly metrics for twenty smart speaker vendors and twelve voice operating systems.
