Army meets reg Sharif's admission of Pakistan's role in Mumbai attacks

Sharif's statement has left the Pakistan Army extremely anxious that "this will give more weight to India's narrative that Pakistan is not doing enough" with respect to the 26/11 trial, and could even put Pakistan on the blacklist of global financial trade agreements. One of them, Ajmal Kasab, was caught and hanged.

The participants of the high-profile meeting, under the chair of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, observed that it was very unfortunate that the opinion arising out of either misconceptions or grievances was being presented in disregard of concrete facts and realities.

However, before the meeting, Sharif defended his remarks saying that "he will continue to speak the truth come what may", Dawn online reported.

Sharif, for the first time, questioned Pakistan's policy to allow the "non-state actors" to cross the border and "kill" people in Mumbai as he publicly acknowledged in an interview that militant groups are active in the country.

"I will stay as prime minister until midnight on May 31", he said. Explain it to me. Sharif had asked in the interview.

The meeting reviewed the recent statement in the context of Mumbai attacks, as it appeared in the Daily Dawn of 12th May 2018, and unanimously termed this statement as incorrect and misleading.

"Surjewala further said: "Our second question to Modi is, will you show the courage of conviction and the 56" chest to ensure that the trial of 26/11 perpetrators, who are neither being adequately tried nor punished in Pakistan, is either held under the guidance of global agencies or they are handed over alternatively to India?"

On Monday, a petition to register a treason case was filed against Sharif, on the grounds that his comments could potentially hurt the nation's security and its institutions. "Call them non-state actors, should we allow them to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai?" said Sharif, referring to the 2008 attacks, in which at least 160 people were killed by gunmen in attacks on hotels and transportation infrastructure in the Indian business hub.

Nawaz also reiterated his demand for the formation of a national commission to separate fact from fiction.

The interview was done by Dawn's Cyril Almeida, the journalist whose 2016 expose of the civil-military divide over militancy - since dubbed the Dawn Leaks - resulted in two PML-N ministers being forced to step down, with analysts suggesting that Sharif's own disqualification as the PM was also influenced by the leaks.

Speaking on this occasion, PTI vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi said he would start meeting the leaders of opposition parties from Tuesday and place Mr Khan's demands before them to forge a national consensus on the issue. At least 166 Indians and foreigners were killed in the bloodbath.

"We have isolated ourselves. Despite giving sacrifices, our narrative is not being accepted", Sharif said. "If we could stop them, it means we had sent them to India", he added.

Lieutenant General Talat Masood, a retired Army officer and former secretary of Pakistan's Ministry of Defense Production, says the NSC meetings are created to maintain the Army narrative, so the handout shouldn't be interpreted as the civilian government stepping away from Nawaz's statement.

Sharif's criticism of the military has caused divisions within his party, analysts say, with some members unhappy about his confrontational approach. He held India responsible for the delay in the trial of the Mumbai attack suspects.
