Arsenal In Talks With Agent But Chelsea Could Hijack Proposed £40m Deal

Arsenal are in talks with Jean-Michael Seri's agent about a possible £40m move but the Nice midfielder favours a switch to Chelsea, according to the Evening Standard.

According to claims from the Mirror, the Blues are leading the race to sign the midfielder, who is a strong target for Arsenal ahead of the summer transfer window.

The newspaper says Arsenal are now pushing hardest to get a deal agreed with director of football Raul Sanllehi holding talks with Seri's representatives about a possible £40m move to the Emirates.

But, a move would subsequently fail to materialise as Nice kept hold of him.

He has been a mainstay in the Nice team again this term, starting 30 games in Ligue 1 and chipping in with two goals, though his role is primarily as a defensive midfielder.

And with Arsene Wenger's successor yet to be named, plans for next season may be affected.

Arsenal are claimed to have opened talks with the Ivory Coast international's representatives as they accelerate their pursuit of the player ahead of the summer.

Arsenal finished in sixth place in the Premier League table this season to miss out on a place in the Champions League for the second successive season.

Chelsea, too, are in need of improving their squad considerably after a below par 2017-18 campaign, and midfield is rightly an area of concern.

There remains an uncertainty over the managerial positions at both Chelsea and Arsenal which could play a part in any negotiations.

And a move for Seri is on the cards, but the Gunners face an uphill battle with the 26-year-old setting his sights elsewhere.
