Baboon on the loose after escaping crate in San Antonio airport

A monkey has been captured by authorities after it escaped from its cage at San Antonio International Airport.

According to ABC News reporters, the baboon was on American Airlines flight 1014 from Chicago, destined for a local animal sanctuary.

The San Antonio Express News reports the monkey, named Dawkins, managed to wander baggage areas of San Antonio Express Airport for about an hour before being cornered.

Dawkins had been part of an animal testing operation at Brown University before being "retired from research protocols".

Stinson says no flights or passengers have been affected and says the baboon was never in the terminal or near passengers.

Staff from the San Antonio Zoo and a wildlife biologist were called in to ensure the baboon's safety.

"We are working closely with the San Antonio Aviation Department and officials from the San Antonio Zoo", the statement said. One Twitter user even made a couple hashtags for the monkey, including #BaboonOnTheRun.

American released a statement, saying the monkey was being taken to an animal sanctuary and refuge. The baboon was reportedly shot with a tranquiliser during its capture.

Viewer video captured the monkey moving from the American Airlines facilities and towards the United Airlines baggage area, where it was able to evade authorities for nearly an hour.

New cellphone video, given exclusively to Fox San Antonio, shows crews- getting ready to fire a tranquilizer gun, at the monkey.
