Bills to retire Thurman Thomas' jersey number

Yes, it has taken this long for the Bills to do something you'd assume had been done years ago.

A total of nine players have donned 34, including Cookie Gilchrist, but no one else since Thurman Thomas.

The team announced Wednesday that the number will officially be retired in a ceremony on October 29, when the Bills host the Patriots on "Monday Night Football".

The running back's number will be retired during the Bills' Monday Night Football home game this season. This is where I saw the fans cheering us on.

Thomas, 51, was the No. 40 overall pick to Buffalo in the 1988 NFL Draft. "This is not just 34 jersey being retired".

Inducted onto the Buffalo Bills Wall of Fame in 2005, Thurman Thomas will join Jim Kelly (#12) and Bruce Smith (#78) as the only players to have their numbers retired by the Bills. Knowing that you were walking out on the football field and the fans felt the same way you felt, that whatever team we were getting ready to play, they were going to get their butt whooped. Thomas spent 12 seasons with the Bills and piled up over 16,000 yards from scrimmage. He was a five-time Pro Bowler who played in four Super Bowls with Buffalo, all four of which the team infamously lost. He and his family still live in the Buffalo area, where Thomas spent 12 of his 13 National Football League seasons.
