Congo, UN deploy specialists to tackle Ebola epidemic

The head of the World Health Organization said Sunday there has been another reported case of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo and that an experimental vaccine to fight the disease is expected to become available in the country this week.

The Democratic Republic of Congo and United Nations agencies began deploying emergency teams of specialists over the weekend to try to prevent the spread of an Ebola epidemic suspected to have infected more than 30 people, they said on Sunday.

The declaration followed laboratory results that confirmed two cases of the disease.

Director-General of WHO, Tedros Ghebreyesus disclosed this to newsmen on Monday.

"We're concerned because this is a city of 1 million people", she said. It is a hemorrhagic fever, marked by spontaneous bleeding from internal organs and, in most cases, death.

The current outbreak is unrelated to the one in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone that killed more than 11,000 people in 2014 and 2015.

Congo suffered eight previous Ebola epidemics.

The latest outbreak is occurring in the northwest of country, in the Bikoro health zone, 400 kilometers (about 250 miles) from Mbandaka, the capital of Equateur province.

The DRC is now in its ninth Ebola outbreak since 1976.

Congo's nine neighbours have been put on high alert in case Ebola crosses a border, especially to Republic of Congo or Central African Republic.
