Death Penalty Demanded For Cleric Accused of Ordering Multiple Terror Attacks

Indonesian prosecutors on Friday sought the death penalty for radical Islamic cleric Aman Abdurrahman who is on trial accused of masterminding a series of attacks, including a deadly 2016 gun and suicide bomb assault in Jakarta, from his jail cell.

Abdurrahman, a key ideologue for IS militants in Indonesia, also ordered a suicide attack in the country's capital on January 24, 2016 that killed 4 civilians and 4 bombers, the court session said.

Indonesian prosecutors have demanded the death penalty for the alleged spiritual leader of the group said to be responsible for the Surabaya bombings.

Another prosecutor, Anita Dewayani, said: "the defendant is legally and convincingly guilty and we demand the panel of judges to impose death sentence".

They also say he was behind a suicide attack past year that killed three police officers at a Jakarta bus station and the bombing of a church in Samarinda on Borneo island that wounded four children.

Aman is one of the influential jihadi ideologues among Islamist militants groups like the local Jamaah Ansharud Daulah (JAD) terror group.

In the trial on February 15, 2017, Aman was said to have instructed five terror attacks namely the Kampung Melayu and Sarinah bombings in Jakarta, Church bombings in Samarinda, terror attacks in North Sumatra Police HQ, and the attacks against police in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara. They included the January 2016 attack on a Starbucks in Jakarta, an attack on a bus terminal in the capital that killed three police officers and an attack on a church in Kalimantan that killed a 2-year-old girl. In all, around 30 people were killed in the attacks, including 13 of the suspected suicide bombers. Picture: AAP.Police say Abdurrahman's actions while behind bars in an Indonesian prison have resulted in the deaths and injuries of many people.

Abdurrahman's next hearing was set for May 25 where he and his lawyer, appointed by the court after the cleric refused to be represented, will respond to the prosecution.
