Florida, Alabama, Mississippi under state of emergencies as Alberto approaches

Alberto, the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season, is barreling through the Caribbean Sea and threatening to bring heavy rainfall, mudslides, and flash floods to parts of Mexico, Cuba, Florida and the US Gulf Coast this Memorial Day Weekend. Saturday morning, Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a statewide state of emergency, a procedural move that clears the way for local, state and federal resource coordination.

At 4 p.m. Saturday the center of Subtropical Storm Alberto northwest of Cuba moving toward the north near 13 miles per hour. The tropical system became a subtropical storm Friday, the hurricane center said.

Saturation from previous rain on the Gulf Coast has created a danger of falling trees with the upcoming wind.

Subtropical Storm Alberto remains disorganized near the Yucatan Peninsula Friday evening, but is still on track to intensify and impact the northern Gulf coast and parts of Florida.

The hurricane center said heavy rain will likely begin to reach the northern Gulf Coast later this weekend and last until early next week. It will spread copious amounts of rain well away from the center.

As of this morning, the storm is not any stronger.

The main and most widespread threat from Alberto is the potential for heavy rain. A flash flood watch has also been extended to Tuesday for the lower six counties. The service warns of a high risk of rip currents for beaches along the Florida coast.

The National Hurricane Center has narrowed its path for Tropical Storm Alberto as it heads north into the Gulf of Mexico, posting tropical storm warnings from the Mississippi/Alabama line to the Aucilla River in Florida'a Big Bend.

DeCarlo said Saturday night that the timing of the surge would have to be in sync with the high tide to reach the 4 feet.

The subtropical storm is meandering to the east at 5 miles per hour. It became a tropical storm that meandered off the cast coast of Georgia and SC. A couple of these tropical showers and thunderstorms could also spawn brief tornadoes.

Already, there was a rainfall record.

Here is the latest on Subtropical Storm Alberto as of the 4PM on Saturday. The current thinking is that Alberto will move northward through the eastern Gulf tomorrow, then slow down and ride along the central Gulf Coast through the day on Monday before making landfall between Pensacola and Ft. Of its 120 drainage pumps, 115 were operational, and the public utility said it had the staff and power to run them in case of severe weather.
