Fortnite Solo Showdown Limited Time Mode announced for Battle Royale

The top 100 players will be awarded.

Earlier this week, some very committed fans of Fortnite Battle Royale dug into the game's files and uncovered content that seemed to suggest that a competitive game mode is on the way.

Epic Games has announced a competitive Limited Time Mode for battle royale, with Solo Showdown, kicking off today. Instead of manipulating the core game, the Solo Showdown event is a test for esports that will send ripples into Fortnite's future.

Place between 50 and 5 and you'll get 13,500 V-bucks, while fourth, third and second place get 25,000 and the victor gets a whopping 50,000.

(Epic Games)What is Solo Showdown and how do you win?

The rules says that placements "will be specially tracked and determine rewards you receive at the end of the event". It lets you really put your skills to the test with prizes on the line. It would cost you almost $400 to purchase 50,000 V-Bucks yourself, or nearly $200 to purchase 25,000.

But the prizes aren't the most exciting thing about Solo Showdown. The goal of the adding the game mode is to provide a "stepping stone to learn how to build great events for all types of players".

The event could help shape Fortnite competitive play, which is coming soon.

Before you jump into your first Solo Showdown match, there are some rules you need to be aware of.

The new mode is going on from now until May 21st at 10 AM ET.

Epic will want to know if Solo Showdown makes lower skilled players feel left out, makes them feel as though they want to get much better at the game, and so on.

The new folder only has a solo variant which might mean that Epic Games could only release a competitive solo first before expanding it to duos and squads.

Fortnite is available now in early access for iOS, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
