Grenfell Tower fire: May pledges to fund cladding removal

Britain will spend £400 million (S$723 million) stripping high-rise buildings of the unsafe cladding blamed for last year's Grenfell Tower fire which left 71 people dead, Prime Minister Theresa May said on Wednesday (May 16).

More than 12,000 buildings in Australia's Queensland state are set to be inspected for flammable cladding, as part of a major audit following a London building fire last June that killed more than 70 people, according to the latest report of a taskforce looking into the matter.

Only buildings owned by councils and housing associations will qualify for funding, the government has said.

The PM said: 'As we approach the anniversary of the appalling tragedy that was the Grenfell Tower fire our thoughts are with the victims and survivors and all those affected by that tragedy'.

Mrs May's announcement at prime minister's questions in the House of Commons came before a Labour-led debate on Grenfell.

Theresa May confirmed the risky materials would be removed during Prime Minister's Questions earlier today.

'When Grenfell survivors and anxious residents in other tower blocks should have seen action, they have had to suffer painfully slow progress and broken promises.

Theresa May announced that it will fully fund the removal work carried out by councils and housing associations.

Some councils have already started work on removing and replacing cladding on tower blocks.

The prime minister told MPs the work would cost an estimated £400million.
