HBO Plans Serial Podcast Docuseries The Case Against Adnan Syed

The new series - entitled The Case Against Adnan Syed and directed by Academy Award nominee Amy Berg - will explore the 18-year-old's disappearance and murder and the subsequent conviction of her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed.

A lower-court judge vacated Syed's conviction in 2016.

During the fall of 2014, it seemed almost impossible to go anywhere without falling into a conversation about the enthralling podcast "Serial", which debuted in October of that year to a seemingly immediate (and obsessed) audience.

Syed was convicted of murdering his high school girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999; the podcast examined evidence and, as its executive producer Julie Snyder told NPR, showed that "the story that the state presented at trial could not have happened".

Since the airing of Serial, Syed's conviction has been vacated, and he was granted a new trial.

In a statement, Sky said the series will present new discoveries and "ground-breaking revelations that challenge the state's case".

Now, a four-hour documentary, The Case Against Adnan Syed, will delve deeper into the subject.

Featured in the docuseries are interviews with Syed; the defense team; Syed's family, friends and former teachers; and members of City of Baltimore law enforcement.

The documentary will debut in Europe on Sky Atlantic and it will closely re-examine the events that lead up to Hae Min Lee's disappearance.

The Case Against Adnan Syed will air on Sky in the United Kingdom and HBO in the US. Now the series is getting a small screen followup, thanks to HBO and Sky.

It's also been revealed that Nick Cave will provide original music for the upcoming project. "The hugely talented Amy Berg has unprecedented access to those closest to the investigation, which is sure to make unmissable viewing".
