JD Martinez, Xander Bogaerts power Red Sox past Athletics, 6-3

Stephen Piscotty homered in his first at-bat after being reinstated from the bereavement list and saluted his late mother as he crossed home plate, helping lead the Oakland Athletics to a 5-3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night in a game delayed nearly two hours because of weather.

Daniel Mengden (3-4) pitched six solid innings for Oakland, scattering eight hits and holding Boston to two runs - one earned - and struck out three.

J.D. Martinez (1-for-3) hit a two-run homer and Hanley Ramirez (1-for-4) had an RBI in the first inning, and Xander Bogaerts (1-for-4) added a three-run homer later in the game.

Martinez launched a two-run shot to left center to highlight a three-run bottom of the first inning and Bogaerts crushed a three-run drive onto Lansdowne Street in the bottom of the sixth, as the Red Sox did all of their scoring in those two frames.

In a strong, but short, outing, Sale threw 102 pitches and walked a season-high four batters.

The 25-year-old shortstop is swinging at 48 percent of the pitches he sees this year, up big from 42 percent last year. Entering the day, the only the Cleveland Indians had more with 63 home runs.

Oakland right fielder Stephen Piscotty dives into the stands to catch a fly ball hit by Boston's Mookie Betts during the sixth inning of Wednesday's game at Fenway Park. Chris Sale (3-1, 2.17 ERA) will take on Trevor Cahill (1-1, 2.25 ERA). Bogaerts has five long balls on the season. He's hitting.388 with 10 homers and 26 RBIs over 30 games since.

If pitchers make a mistake against Martinez right now, the ball isn't staying in the park. Oakland right-hander Andrew Triggs (3-1, 5.31) faces the Toronto Blue Jays tonight.
