NFL Considering 15-Yard Penalties For Players Kneeling During Anthem

The National Football League will fine teams if players on the field refuse to stand for the national anthem, the league said on Wednesday in a victory for U.S. President Donald Trump, who loudly demanded an end to such protests previous year.

"We want people to be respectful to the National Anthem", Goodell said.

Goodell said the league is still committed to working with players to "advance the goals of justice and fairness in all corners of our society". Several players continued Kaepernick's protest throughout last season and the league has been looking for various ways to try and work with its players to address the grievances they have.

Below is the full policy and you can read the commissioner's statement here.

Colin Kaepernick garnered national attention for his protests two seasons ago, kneeling during the anthem to bring attention to issues including police brutality and racial inequality in the justice system.

So it would make sense that Trump Jr. took it as a victory when the National Football League announced the change Wednesday that requires players on the field to stand for the anthem and, more vaguely, "show respect" for the anthem and flag.

The league announced today that all players and league personnel on the sidelines must stand for the national anthem or face a fine on their teams.

While Kaepernick was out of the league in 2017, protests of a similar nature became more common across the NFL, with players including Michael Bennett and Marshawn Lynch taking part.

Much of the protesting had stopped until President Donald Trump injected himself into the conversation, saying players who kneel should be fired. "This is not and was never the case".

At the conclusion of the meetings on Wednesday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to hold a news conference, as is his custom. Players around the league soon followed suit, sparking national debate. And the opinions on everything from its timing and implementation to its reasoning and effectiveness are divided, with one team chairman, the New York Jets' Christopher Johnson, already offering to pay for any fines his players receive. The unique platform that we have created is unprecedented in its scope, and will provide extraordinary resources in support of programs to promote positive social change in our communities.

Players or other team personnel will have the option to remain off the field during the anthem and not be penalized.

Other players took up the cause, and the gesture carried on during the 2017 season even after Kaepernick left the 49ers and failed to land a job with another team.

"We've been very sensitive in making sure that we give players choices, but we do believe that that moment is an important moment and one that we are going to focus on".

"Our union will review the new "policy" and challenge any aspect of it that is inconsistent with the collective bargaining agreement", the NFLPA said in a statement. Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown reportedly told free agent safety Eric Reid this offseason that he plans to require Bengals players to stand for the anthem.
