Nicola Sturgeon pledges to 'restart debate' on Scottish independence

Nicola Sturgeon will "restart the debate" on Scottish independence in the coming weeks as the findings of her party's economic growth commission are revealed.

Scotland's First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, speaks at a Reuters Newsmaker event, in London, Britain May 14, 2018.

Ms Sturgeon said the timing of any future independence referendum was an issue for "later", referring back to previous comments where she said a decision would be taken once there was more "clarity" about the outcome of Brexit.

The First Minister said the imminent publication of a report by the SNP's Economic Growth Commission, set up in 2016, would be an "important moment" in her battle to break up the UK.

"So I believe most of the UK's fishing infrastructure should be based north of the border".

The commission is to make recommendations on the monetary policy for an independent Scotland as well as the range of transitional costs and benefits associated with independence.

"But of course over the next couple of weeks we will, I suppose, restart a debate about why independence for Scotland is an opportunity and what those opportunities are".

Scottish Labour meanwhile has argued that the SNP should focus on housing, economy and health instead of "igniting another divisive independence referendum campaign".

She said: "All the indicators are that she wants to press ahead and seize the shot at history that eluded her predecessor Alex Salmond. If anything it has reminded folks that constitutional change brings insecurity and uncertainty".

Wealthy investors would be given preferential treatment under a separate Scotland's immigration system using.

"As long as our future relationship with the European Union is in flux, it would be foolish to assume that the current trends on Scotland remaining in the United Kingdom will hold and that the threat of separation has gone away", Ms Davidson said.

In her interview on Peston, Ms Sturgeon also repeated her assertion that the SNP would not be a block to a second referendum on the terms of the Brexit deal.

Scottish politicians passed a motion in May stating it does not consent to the UK Government's EU Withdrawal Bill, which Brexit-supporter Bernard Jenkin said revolved around a "manufactured row".
