Nigeria announce preliminary World Cup squad

Nigeria Coach Gernot Rohr has named a provisional 30-man squad ahead of the Federation Internationale de Football Association 2018 World Cup due in Russia next month.

Midfielder John Obi Mikel was named captain.

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL)/leading top scorer Junior Lokosa and Simeon Nwankwo are the new faces that graced the list.

Rohr selected goalkeepers Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Francis Uzoho of Deportivo La Coruna, Daniel Akpeyi and Dele Ajiboye, meaning no recall for veteran Vincent Enyeama.

Defenders: Abdullahi Shehu (Bursaspor FC); Tyronne Ebuehi (Ado Den Haag); Olaoluwa Aina (Hull City); Elderson Echiejile (Cercle Brugge KSV); Brian Idowu (Amkar Perm); Chidozie Awaziem (Nantes FC, ); William Ekong (Bursaspor FC); Leon Balogun (Mainz); Kenneth Omeruo (Kasimpasa FC); Stephen Eze (Lokomotiv Plovdiv).

Also in the team are Leicester City's duo of Wilfried Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, Ogenyi Onazi, Kenneth Omeruo, Ahmed Musa and China-based Odion Ighalo.

All invited players have been told to report at the Le Meridien Hotel and Golf Resort, Uyo on Monday, 21st May.

Nigeria finished their World Cup qualifying group comfortably in the first place gaining 14 points out of possible 18.

Javier Mascherano will play a part in the defence, alongside Premier League champion, Nicolas Otamendi and others including Marcos Rojo and Gabriel Mercado.

Nigeria begin their 2018 Fifa World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 16 at the Kaliningrad Stadium before facing Iceland (June 22) and Argentina (June 26) in Volgograd and Saint Petersburg respectively.
