Overwatch will be free to play for a weekend

As seen below in Blizzard's most recent developer update video for Overwatch, game director Jeff Kaplan announces the player milestone and uses it as a segue into revealing a new free-for-all Deathmatch map called Petra, as well as the eventual return of all the title's previous skins, Brawls, and other cosmetics to unlock.

"Petra is attractive", Kaplan said during Wednesday's Developer Update video.

The new edition comes at a ideal time for new players considering picking up the game. They're for some of our favorite Heroes. For example, a Summer Games 2016 legendary skin will cost 1,000 credits while a Summer Games 2017 legendary skin will cost 3,000 credits and so on. Namely, he mentioned that a certain dapper gentleman will be getting a legendary skin that has been widely requested by the community. We will find out for sure when the Anniversary Event starts on May 22nd. To help celebrate this and the anniversary, players can log in during the Overwatch Anniversary event and receive a free Legendary Anniversary Loot Box.

Considering everything that will be on the table during the team-based shooter's Anniversary event, it definitely seems like a good time to be an Overwatch fan. Petra will be the showcase for a Competitive Deathmatch playlist, while Chateau will also be in the rotation to mix things up. In a move to make these Anniversary Loot Boxes more special than ever before, they'll now include a guaranteed Anniversary item and a chance to get an item from all past seasonal events since launch. Is this year's Anniversary Event the best one so far?

Overwatch is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
