Laurin's memoir is called "D.B". In a news conference Thursday, Laurin presented evidence for his assertions about the infamous hijacker, whom he claims was named Walter "Walt" Raca, MLive.com reported.

Principia Media insists it "spent several years conducting a private investigation with a linguistic forensic and interviewing dozens of individuals to confirm Carl and Lisa's story".

Reca, a former paratrooper who also claimed to have worked as a spy for the US government, is far from the first man to declare he was D.B. Cooper.

Reca, of Oscoda, Michigan, was born in 1933 and died in 2014, said Julie Hurley, a spokesperson for Principia Media. Laurin also has audio files of phone conversations in which, Laurin says, Reca provided details about the skyjacking before they were publicly known. A man calling himself Dan Cooper, wearing a black suit and tie, boarded a Boeing 727 bound for Seattle at an OR airport.

Principia Media says they will release evidence like documentation how the $200,000 was spent, confessions from Reca to two different people and witness testimony from a person who spoke with Reca within an hour of his jump.

He demanded $200,000 in ransom and once he got the money, parachuted out of the plane - never to been seen again.

He claims Reca put the stolen cash - equivalent to $1million in 2018 - in the bank, before lining up another overseas 'job'.

"He was a daredevil", said Laurin, who was a member of the Michigan Parachute Club with Reca. It was done, and I lived through it'.

Principa Media says Reca became a high-level covert operative after the heist.

Laurin added that Reca's membership of the Michigan Parachute Team gave him the skills necessary to survive jumping out of the Boeing 727 at 10,000ft - and that he was snapped attending a reunion of the team in 2000.

The book, D.B. Cooper & Me: A Criminal Spy, My Best Friend, is out now. The FBI said in court papers that it has more than 71,000 documents that may be responsive to Colbert's lawsuit.
