Samsung reportedly in talks with ZTE to supply Exynos smartphone CPUs

Samsung reportedly in talks with ZTE to supply Exynos smartphone CPUs

Its flagship Exynos mobile chips power Samsung's Galaxy line of smartphones, but the chipset has only one external smartphone client - China's Meizu Technology.

Beleaguered Chinese networking equipment and smartphone maker ZTE is reportedly in talks with Samsung Electronics over sourcing the company's Exynos mobile microprocessors.

Samsung is reportedly talking to "all OEMs" as it looks to expand its Exynos brand.

The Department of Commerce issued a Denial Order against ZTE in mid-April, resulting in a seven-year ban that prevents it from using any exported hardware or software products from the U.S. Although President Trump has said he's working on helping ZTE rise above this, it's since halted all of its major business operations.

ZTE now represents a hard situation for many non-US companies looking to do business. Kang sounded confident that Samsung would reveal a new licensee in the first half of 2019. Since the smartphone market is slowing down, Samsung is also hoping to start delivering 5G chips to the automotive industry, with Reuters reporting Audi is going to become its first client.

Samsung's System LSI business saw a 27 percent rise in shipments previous year, Counterpoint says.

The processor taps into the electronic giant's 10-nanometre (nm) FinFET process, which it claims "elevates the multimedia experience in high-end smartphones". In an interview, Inyup Kang, the head of Samsung's System LSI division, said the company is "talking to all OEMs" about the supply of chips.

What phones would you like to see powered by Exynos processors?

Currently Samsung, which is the world's smartphone manufacturer, is also the world largest semiconductor based microprocessor chipset manufacturer in the world.

Samsung's semiconductor business reported an operating profit of 35.2 trillion won (a whopping £24.5 billion) in 2017.
