Say goodbye to sickies - scientists claim they've a cure for the cold

Researchers at the Imperial College of London have developed a molecule that interferes with the rhinovirus' ability to create a protective shell necessary for it to replicate.

The problem with the common cold is that it isn't just one virus. They are now planning to move IMP-1088 into animal trials to ensure that it is safe and that it doesn't target other conditions with different causes, according to the statement.

It's a family of viruses that evolve so quickly no one can ever be fully immune to the cold, and developing a vaccine that can tackle all of the variations of the virus is impossible.

Much of the effort to cure the common cold is centered around targeting the genomes of the viruses that cause it.

The treatment blocks a key protein in the body's cells that cold viruses normally hijack to self-replicate and spread.

In a paper published to Nature Chemistry, the team detailed its new molecule, which targets N-myristoyltransferase (NMT), a protein in human cells.

"Rhinoviruses (RVs) are the pathogens most often responsible for the common cold, and are a frequent cause of exacerbations in asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cystic fibrosis".

All strains of the virus need this same human protein to make new copies of themselves, so the molecule should work against all of them.

They're working on making a form of the drug that can be inhaled as a way to reduce any further risks or complications.

Previous efforts to create drugs that target human cells rather than infections have failed thanks to "toxic side effects".

Researchers envisage that, in its first formulation, the molecule would be made into a throat spray which people would use when symptoms are detected, similar to hay fever medication. After screening large libraries of compounds, they found two hits and were surprised to discover that they worked best together. Scientists hope the new molecule, code-named IMP-1088, can be administered simply using an inhaler.
