The U.S. Treasury Department said four other individuals were also sanctioned, as was the group ISIS in the Greater Sahara, which was designated as a foreign terrorist organisation.

The US Department of the Treasury announced on Wednesday that it designated the leader of the Shia Muslim group Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah for new sanctions as well as other individuals.

In addition, the other six TFTC member countries, namely Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), also designated the key Hezballah-affiliated individuals and entities, which have already been on the U.S. blacklist.

The Shura Council is Hezbollah's premier decision-making body responsible for religious, military, and strategic matters and asserts control over administrative, planning, and policy-making authorities. The US Treasury had previously designated Nasrallah for disrupting the Middle East peace process in 1995 and for actions in Syria in 2012. "By targeting Hizballah's Shura Council, our nations collectively rejected the false distinction between a so-called "Political Wing" and Hezbollah's global terrorist plotting".

Hezbollah deputy secretary-general Sheikh Naim Qassem speaks to thousands of Lebanese demonstrating in Beirut city centre in November 2004. He has also managed "Hezbollah's" bank accounts.

Last October, the group announced joint sanctions on top Islamic State and Al-Qaeda figures in Yemen.

The TFTC facilitates coordinated disruptive actions, sharing of financial intelligence information, and member state capacity-building to target terrorist financing networks and related activities that pose national security threats to TFTC members.

Shi'ite Hezbollah was formed to combat Israel's 1982-2000 occupation of Lebanon.

The move came 10 days after Hezbollah gave a strong showing in Lebanon's elections, garnering enough seats in parliament to block any attempt by its political foes to make it disarm its militia, which rivals the Lebanese army in size and firepower.

Experts say that Saudi Arabia is especially seeking to lower Iran's influence in the region by keeping step with the Trump administration. The Lebanon-based group is backed by Iran.
