US Secretary of State threatens Iran with worst sanctions yet

Pompeo said Iran will be "battling to keep its economy alive" under the sanctions and will have to choose between maintaining its economy or sponsoring terrorist and insurgent groups in countries like Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen - what he called "squandering precious wealth on fights overseas".

In the short run, we can expect the European Union to negotiate with Iran to increase investment and support in order to keep Iran in the deal.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo delivers remarks on Iran at the Heritage Foundation on Monday in Washington. European nations that are still involved in the JCPOA are working with Iran to ensure that the deal will continue to move forward. It protected the world from an Iranian nuclear bomb, and in return it gave the Iranians some recognisable economic benefits. "This is a change, this is shifting away from more of an accommodation of the Iranians to taking them on".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo plans to unveil the Trump administration's new Iran strategy in an address Monday morning.

In a briefing for reporters last week, State Department officials said Pompeo would be "presenting a diplomatic roadmap to achieve a new security architecture and a better security framework, a better deal, following the President's decision to end America's participation" in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

Weeks after the United States pulled out of an worldwide nuclear deal with Iran, Pompeo spelled out a hardline approach towards the Islamic Republic, potentially setting Washington and Tehran on a deeper confrontation course.

Tehran must allow "unqualified access to all sites throughout the country", including military sites that were declared off-limits under the old agreement. To that end, he also said Iran must declare all previous efforts to build a nuclear weapon, reopening an issue that the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency has already deemed a closed matter.

Pompeo took aim at Iran's policy of expanding its influence in the Middle East through support for proxy armed groups in countries such as Syria and Yemen.

Several global energy companies say they are also reconsidering their current projects in Iran.

Experts say Pompeo's speech represents a seismic shift in America's policy toward Iran.

Several major European companies expressed concern about continuing business with Iran following the U.S. exit, raising further doubts about the viability of the deal. "If they make the decision quickly, that would be wonderful". "Should they choose to go back, should they begin to enrich, we are fully prepared to respond to that as well", Pompeo said, declining to detail what the response could be. The secretary said the administration ultimately wants a ratified treaty.

Verheugen's comments come after Trump pulled out of the landmark Iran nuclear deal earlier this month, despite Washington's biggest allies - the UK, Germany, and France - urging him not to do so. Europeans allies had pleaded with Trump not to scuttle that deal and are now scrambling to keep the deal alive even without the U.S.

He also stressed that not only European countries but countries around the world should be involved in the forming of a new Iran deal - including Australia, Bahrain, Egypt, India, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, the UAE, and "many, many others worldwide".

"I think this is for many people here in the Middle East a breath of fresh air when the Trump administration is really holding Iran accountable for all the things they are doing here in the Middle East", Mitchell said shortly after Pompeo's speech. But he warned them that the USA planned to follow through with threats to punish European companies that continue doing business with Iran that is allowed under the deal but will violate reimposed US sanctions.

'It must cease its threatening behavior against its neighbors, ' Pompeo said. "We didn't create the list, they did".
