595bhp Aston Martin Rapide AMR revealed

The AMR-badged, four-door Rapide follows hot on the heels of the DB11 AMR (which we've driven in Germany), and is based on the concept shown at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2017, retaining the gaping front grille and boasting circular daytime running lights that reference recent Zagato models. A new front splitter, deeper side skirts, an aggressive rear diffuser and small lip spoiler - all made from carbon fibre - reduce lift.

They're needed, too, since underneath is a revamped version of the naturally-aspirated 6.0-liter V12 that helps makes the Rapide so endearing.

The increase in power is achieved by enhanced airflow to the engine as a result of larger inlet manifolds as well as new engine and gearbox calibration. It means a hefty 580 HP and 465 lb-ft of torque. Despite the changes, the Rapide AMR shares the same 0-100 km/h time as the 560 PS-rated Rapide S at 4.4 seconds, but has a slightly higher top speed of 330 km/h (versus 327 km/h). Slowing, meanwhile, comes courtesy of new carbon ceramic brakes, with 400mm front discs with six piston calipers, and 360mm rear discs with four piston calipers.

The interior matches the colour you've chosen, with either lime green or silver contrast stitching and welting on the alcantara seats, AMR logos stitched into the upholstery and a full-length carbon-fibre centre console - also a first for a Rapide. The forged multi-spokes have been created to be not only stiff but allow plenty of air to flow through, helping keep the brakes cooling. An evolution of the brake cooling system used by the Vanquish S introduces new brake ducts and dust shields to help maintain consistently powerful stopping power.

The suspension retains the three-stage adaptive dampers of the Rapide S, but with extensively revised spring and damping rates, and a 10mm lower ride.

Not everything has been done with performance alone in mind. Even the colour schemes available ensure that the AMR won't go unnoticed.

There are three design schemes: Standard, Silhouette and Signature.

The Silhouette does without the lime, instead getting a full-length stripe available in either grey or white.

Meanwhile, the Signature scheme (pictured) teams Stirling Green exterior paint with Lime accents and a Lime stripe, which "draws the closest visual link to the Aston Martin Racing team". Optionally available for the full race auto experience are carbon paddle shifters, a One-77 steering wheel and, er, an umbrella. Do take note that these prices are before any customisation work by Aston Martin's in-house Q division.

Tempted? You'll need to act pretty fast if you want a Rapide AMR on your driveway.

The Aston Martin Rapide AMR will be available worldwide (except Russian Federation and China) from the final quarter of 2018, with prices starting at £194 950 (R3.48 million) ex factory in the United Kingdom; expect to pay about R6 million landed in South Africa.
