A silver lining? Trump says Warmbier’s death helped North Korea talks

Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un pledged, in the first ever meeting between leaders of the long-time foes, to work toward complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula while Washington committed to providing security guarantees.

A day after his historic nuclear summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jon Un in Singapore, Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday saying the meeting was a "very positive experience" and "everyone can feel much safer than the day I took office".

By claiming that the North Korean nuclear threat has disappeared, Trump also risks weakening the USA negotiating position in talks on denuclearization that were mandated by the summit and will be led from the U.S. side by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

"Before taking office people were assuming that we were going to War with North Korea", he continued.

South Korea will be looking for clarity from Mike Pompeo on key security issues raised by the Trump-Kim summit, when the USA secretary of state visits Seoul on Wednesday.

But he said that was no longer the case, and everyone can "sleep well tonight". In return, Trump has promised to stop USA military drills in South Korea.

With both Trump and Kim now having exchanged invitations to each other's countries, the United States president sees a promising personal relationship with his North Korean counterpart as the key to further progress.

During a news conference after the summit, when asked why "complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization" was not secured in the details of the agreement, Trump conceded that there simply was "no time". On Wednesday North Korean state media said that in addition to suspending joint military drills, Trump agreed to lift sanctions against North Korea.

"We're hopeful that we can achieve that in, what was it, the next two and half years", Pompeo said Wednesday.

Trump, seemingly unprompted, has long wanted to withdraw the United States from South Korea, and now he may have found a reason.

Both sides promised to push the process forward quickly, and Trump and Kim exchanged invitations to each other to visit their nations' capitals. Already, North Korea has criticized the US and South Korea's military drills, saying they're not helpful for peace talks. That concession to Kim appeared to catch the Pentagon and officials in Seoul off guard, and some South Koreans were alarmed. -North Korea summit, is expected to pick up a considerable portion of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's bills. The next scheduled major exercise, involving tens of thousands of troops, normally is held in August. "We're not engaged in any reduction of USA forces talks, and I think we all wait until after this settles and we go forward".

Seth Meyers gave the "Closer Look" treatment to the monumental meeting, paying particular attention to Trump and Kim's ill-fitting suits.

It's reflective of a broader theme on the KOSPI index, with other South Korean construction companies (such as Hyundai Cement, up more than 300%) also posting strong gains in recent months. He said he planned to continue sharing the view with Washington and Seoul.

"At this current point, there is a need to discern the exact meaning and intent of President Trump's comments", Seoul's Defense Ministry said, Twin Cities Pioneer Press reported.
