After 2 year gap, Rahul Gandhi to host Congress iftar

He is scheduled to appear before a court in Thane district's Bhiwandi area at 11 am in connection with a defamation case a worker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh had filed against him. This comes days after former President and senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee attended an RSS event in Nagpur.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi began trending on Twitter right after delivering his speech.

On 2 May, the court had asked Gandhi to appear before it on 12 June to record his statement in the defamation case Rajesh Kunte had filed against him in 2014. During his two-day visit to Maharashtra, Rahul Gandhi is also expected to address party workers and interact with its corporators in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

He said the party workers would be enrolled for the project using their basic details and confirming that those enrolling were actually Congress men. "They don't get any support from the officials", Rahul added. "This is the love the common man feels for our party president", said Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam. "Top leaders (of both parties) can meet any time, but no such meeting is on the agenda for Monday", PTI quoted a party leader as saying.

"The "Project Shakti" will not only ensure the connect with the ground-level workers but also ensure that their grievances, if any, are resolved at the earliest". Coca-Cola, a soft drink giant, was started by a man selling shikanji (lemonade) in the US, Rahul said, highlighting the fact that in the West, people are rewarded for putting in industry and honest labour, unlike in India.

The Congress party recognises the strength of the backward classes and wants to empower them by bringing them forward in politics, Gandhi said, in a bid to win over the community of Other Backward Classes ahead of the Lok Sabha elections next year.
