Amazon device-making factory slammed for harsh working conditions

Amazon is once again under fire, as a China Labor Watch report detailing the cruel conditions of Foxconn factory workers hit the web, pointing out the grueling work days required to assemble and clean devices like the Kindle or the Echo.

Taiwan-based Foxconn is the world's largest contract electronics manufacturer and employs more than a million people.

China Labor Watch added that around 40 per cent of the plant's staff were dispatch workers, around 10 per cent higher than the limit dictated by Chinese law.

It was also noted that the workers at Hengyang were being paid significantly less than workers at other Foxconn factories. These dispatch workers were paid normal rates for overtime hours and received only three to eight hours of training instead of the mandated 24. Foxconn told Reuters it is carrying out its own investigation and will rectify any misconduct it finds. The report also highlights how wages are deducted as penalty when these workers take leave or "unexcused absences".

It's report controversially alleges that Amazon "profits from secretly oppressing its supplier's workers".

China Labor Watch's investigator worked on the factory's night shift, brushing dust off Alexa Echo Dot speakers from 8 p.m. until the small hours of the morning. "I hope that you can compel your suppliers to improve their working situations and to manufacture Amazon products under ethical conditions".

"Amazon has the ability to not only ensure its supplier factories respects the rights of workers but also that there is equal pay for equal work", said China Labor Watch on its site.

Foxconn, which also makes Apple Inc (AAPL.O) iPhones, came under fire in 2010 for a spate of suicides at plants in China.

Amazon said it had completed an audit of the factory in March and found violations regarding overtime and the use of dispatch workers, which it asked Foxconn to remedy.

As Bezos claimed the title as the richest man in the world, reports pile in that show that Amazon is treating their workers badly, both in the USA and beyond.

According to the CLW report, its employees continue to be subject to a grueling 100 hours of monthly overtime, which should have been no more than 36 hours.

In its statement, Foxconn said salary reviews "are conducted regularly and we ensure that we offer all employees remuneration that exceeds statutory requirements and that is competitive with our industry peers".

In a statement released earlier Foxconn said that it works diligently to comply with all the relevant regulations and laws where it has operations and it conducts audits on a regular basis.
