Apple iPhone to Support USB-C Next Year

It's easy to jump to the conclusion that this change is purely an effort to block law enforcement from using brute force tactics to gain access to iOS devices. Provided that the cops have physical access to a device, the $15,000 tool enables authorities to get their way inside, given a week or so of passcode guessing attempts.

Apple's iPhone could be in for a big change next year.

The Cupertino-based smartphone giant was reported to have been considering making the move with the current crop of iPhones but apparently had to shelve the feature until next year due to time constraints. It's entirely plausible that Apple would switch that end from USB-A over to USB-C while leaving the Lightning port on the other end intact in order to continue reaping the benefits in accessory licensing. In that mode, which will be the default, only charging will be possible through the port after the initial one hour period has expired.

"We're constantly strengthening the security protections in every Apple product to help customers defend against hackers, identity thieves and intrusions into their personal data", said the company in a statement. If they want to unlock suspect devices, they'll need to plug them into a GrayKey within an hour of seizing them, which could mean deploying the GrayKey devices far more proactively with first responders, rather than keeping them in a lab. So it likely won't appear in the iPhone 2018 line-up expected this September.

Apple representatives said the change in settings will protect customers in countries where law enforcement seizes and tries to crack phones with fewer legal restrictions than under US law.

Either way, researchers and police vendors will find new ways to break into phones, and Apple will then look to patch those vulnerabilities.
