Arsenal boost as 23-year-old terminates Sporting Lisbon contract

AC Milan have joined the transfer chase for Arsenal wing target Gelson Martins, who has put in a request with the Portuguese FA to terminate his contract with Sporting Lisbon.

Martins is among a host of Sporting stars who are rebelling against the club after their troubled season.

An attack on the players and the coaching staff by a group of disgruntled fans last month has already forced players such as Rui Patricio and Bas Dost to terminate their contracts.

Sporting superstar Gelson Martins is reportedly trying to engineer a move away from the Portuguese giants and could be available on a free if he manages to do so.

Martins is set to become a free agent after winding down his contract at Sporting Lisbon and several media outlets in Portugal had been linking him with a transfer to Benfica.

Arsenal are believed to be on the lookout for a number of new signings this summer as Unai Emery prepares for his first season in charge.

Martins on a free would be a bargain for any top club, as he enjoyed a fine season despite a hard campaign for the 18-time domestic champions.

Sporting finished seventh in the league last season, three points off a European spot and 36 points behind champions Porto.

The Portuguese global has notched up 13 goals and 13 assists in all competitions last season, and his direct attacking style of play is something Pochettino has been craving to be part of his set up at Spurs.

As the Gunners weigh up a swoop for Martins, they are thought to be closing in on a double deal for midfielder Lucas Torreira and goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
