Don’t get pregnant for World Cup guests, MP warns Russian women

"Who will marry (them)?" "These children then suffer and they suffered even in Soviet times", she said, suggesting the children of interracial couples had the worst experience. The danger, according to parliament's families committee chairwoman Tamara Pletnyova, is that "the inappropriate behavior of Russian women" will lead to single-parent families, and "nothing good will come out of it". Pletnyova's fear stems from a group of single mothers raising children conceived during the 1980 Olympic Games held in Moscow during the era of the Soviet Union.

The World Cup hosted by Russian Federation could boost the number of young women falling pregnant, the top politician warned, adding: 'I hope they get something clear in their heads regarding foreigners.

The term was used during the Soviet era to describe non-white children conceived at worldwide events after relationships between Russian women and men from Africa, Latin America, or Asia. "We should be birthing our own children". I'm not a nationalist, but nevertheless I know that children suffer. They are being dumped and this is it.

Urging women to marry "Russian citizens" instead, she said that children risked being "abandoned and just left with their mother" or being taken overseas by their fathers.

In comments to Govorit Moskva radio station, Alexander Sherin also said Russians should be careful in their interactions with foreigners as they might try to circulate banned substances at the tournament.

'Then they come to see me at parliament and cry that their children were taken away, snatched from them. Women are often stranded overseas or in Russian Federation but unable to get their children back, she said. "I would like people to get married based on love in our country, regardless of which ethnicity, [to] Russian citizens who would build a good family, live in harmony, have children, and raise them", Pletnyova added.

Her comments drew criticism and ridicule.

'We're not in America or Europe. "If a woman doesn't want it, no one is going to harass her", she told Gazeta.ru news site in February.

Thousands of soccer fans from 31 countries are travelling to the World Cup in Russian Federation that kicks off on Thursday with an opening ceremony in the capital followed by a match between the host team and Saudi Arabia.
