DUP to back Theresa May over Brexit amendments

"When the Government is able to set out an achievable, clearly defined path, one that has been properly considered, whose implications have been foreseen, and that is rooted in reality and evidence, not dreams and dogma, it should go to the people, once again, to seek their confirmation", he wrote.

Among the 14 amendments to the Bill - set to be voted on by MPs on Tuesday and Wednesday - are changes which would see the United Kingdom stay in the Single Market and would allow Parliament to dictate future negotiating terms.

Lee said that within government he "found it virtually impossible to help bring sufficient change to the course on which we are bound".

"The government have conceded that this is necessary and I expect to see a new amendment to cover this situation soon". "A vote between bad and worse is not a meaningful vote". "And I can not bring myself to vote for it in the bastion of liberty, freedom and human rights that is our Parliament".

It will repeal the European Communities Act, which took Britain into what was then the European Economic Community, meaning EU law is no longer supreme in the UK.

Lee said "the people, economy and culture of my constituency will be affected negatively" by Britain's European Union departure, and it is "irresponsible to proceed as we are". But there is going to be no binary choice of the deal on the table or no deal, with Parliament bypassed.

Dominic Grieve tabled an amendment last night which forced the government's hand over the issue of a meaningful vote.

Brexit Secretary David Davis urged MPs to "respect the result of the referendum" that approved the withdrawal.

In a day of drama at Westminster, ministers caved into the rebel demands for a "meaningful vote" on Brexit in order to prevent a defeat on the EU Withdrawal bill which could have triggered a leadership crisis for the prime minister.

"The Brexit secretary has set out three tests that any new amendment has to meet - not undermining the negotiations, not changing the constitutional role of parliament and government in negotiating global treaties, and respecting the referendum result".

But in a last-ditch concession by the Government to swerve a revolt, the PM is indicating that it will put forward two of the three parts of Mr Grieve's amendment when the bill returns to the House of Lords.

Grieve told MPs: "If we don't achieve a deal at all, the fact is we are going to be facing an vast crisis".

May is seeking to overturn 14 of 15 amendments passed by the Lords earlier this year, but has a fight on her hands due to her fragile majority in the 650-seat Commons.

The upshot is that May has survived another day in the battle to extract Britain from the European Union - and may yet pull off a compromise that wins the support of both wings of her party - but it is the rebel Remainers who believe they are now in the ascendency.

Ukip leader Gerard Batten said: "The only "meaningful vote" was the verdict of the people in referendum of 23rd June 2016".

He also warned any attempt by so-called hard Brexiteers to "overthrow" Mrs May would be "completely mad".

Earlier, May appeared to have also stemmed a rebellion over her commitment to leaving the EU's customs union which will transform Britain's trading relationships for decades to come.
