Haim fire agent over gender pay inequality in festival

She said, "We talk about this all the time, how there aren't enough female represented bands and artists at festivals". The band did not disclose who the particular male artist was, but they told Grazia magazine that they didn't question their payment because they were told it was a promotional opportunity. It's fucked up not even to be paid half the same amount.

Gender equality has always been a contentious issue in the music industry.

As the band explained in a recent interview with Grazia (via NME), they were encouraged to play at an unnamed festival for a low fee under the expectation that their performance would lead to subsequent radio play. But to be paid a 10th of that amount of money? "And because of that we fired our agent", Danielle continued.

Danielle also acknowledged that it will be tough for the sisters to verify similar situations in the future, adding, "It's so hard to check: everything's so secretive about how much people are getting paid, and that's bullshit".

HAIM's concerns are valid. Whether it be male-dominated lineups or unfair pay gaps, musicians have been speaking out for some time now in regards to getting a fair go. Additionally, top leadership roles were overwhelmingly occupied by men.

Pay equity is an issue that has been discussed throughout various industries in recent years, and it appears that the problem exists in the music industry as well.

"There's so many incredible women that work in music and I think it's time more girls looked into being engineers and studio technicians". "These agenda-setting songs are like so many other forms of entertainment - reflective of a largely male perspective".
