Chopra was apologising for hurting sentiments of Hindus, for an episode of Quantico that had depicted Indian nationalists trying to frame Pakistan in a terrorist plot.

JW Marriot hotel, however, distanced itself from the chef's comments. "Shame on You (sic)", Kochhar tweeted on Sunday.

Many Twitter users criticised Kochhar.

He later deleted the tweet and put out an apology, saying the "major error" was "made in the heat of the moment on Sunday". I fully recognise my inaccuracies that Islam was founded round 1400 years ago and I sincerely apologise.

The London-based chef, who is associated with the Rang Mahal restaurant in Dubai as well as five others in the United Kingdom and Spain, had been reacting to an episode of the US TV programme Quantico.

Meanwhile, reacting to his sacking, Kochhar told Khaleej Times newspaper that the decision was 'deeply upsetting.' He said, "The decision by JW Marriott Maquis is deeply upsetting, however I fully accept the great pain I have caused and the hard position the hotel has been put in. We would like to stress that we do not share the same views as stated in the remark, nor is it a representation of the culture of diversity and inclusion that we pride ourselves on at the hotel", the hotel tweeted on Monday.
