Indian scientists discover planet 600 light years away from Earth

This is the first of its kind spectrograph in the country, which can measure the mass of a planet going around a star and with this discovery India has joined a handful of countries which have discovered planets around stars.

The exoplanet is reported to be smaller than Saturn but bigger than Neptune. One of the three is exactly the same size as our own world, and the others are only ever so slightly bigger, according to AzVision. Both the planet and the star have been named EPIC. "It is closer to Neptune", he said, pointing out that the new planet had 27 times the mass of Earth and six times its radius. It is seven times closer to the star as compared to the distance between the Earth and the Sun. Such a high temperature might make it uninhabitable for living creatures.

Ahmedabad have discovered a sub-Saturn or super-Neptune size exoplanet. The scientists estimate that over 60% of its mass could be made up of heavy elements like ice, silicates and iron. It has the name EPIC 211945201 (K2-236) and thus, the planet has been given the name EPIC 211945201B (K2-236B).

The second red dwarf star that was detected with a new planetary system is K2-240, and this particular star features two large planets that are double the size of Earth.

PARAS was integrated with a 1.2m telescope at PRL's Gurushikhar Observatory in Mount Abu, India.

Scientists now hope to use further observations - from the new James Webb Space Telescope - to understand more about the planets' atmospheres. It was designed by the members of the Astronomy and Astrophysics Division of PRL.

On the other hand, only a few such accurate and powerful spectrographs exist around the world, the majority of which being in the USA and Europe. The PRL scientists observed the target for around 420 days for probing the nature of the system using the PARAS spectrograph. It is expected to be launched in 2020. "Extra" implies that these are outside our solar system.

The first exoplanet was discovered in the early 1990s. But the newly discovered worlds are much closer, meaning that the temperature is probably too hot for life.
