Jogger who trashed homeless man's belongings arrested

A GoFundMe website to help the homeless man whose belongings were thrown into Lake Merritt had raised $10,731 as of 11 a.m. today, well above its $3,000 goal. The police showed up soon after as the guy ran away to continue his workout.

"It's not OK to destroy someone's things just because they are homeless. Only possibility is he may get a fine for littering", John Harris, who shot one of the videos, wrote on Facebook.

Many suggested that the homeless person was already dealing with stress living on the streets and that seeing all of his possessions scattered and tossed out would make his situation worse.

Jogger in Oakland, California throws homeless man's belongings into lake, trash can. In an odd twist, another Facebook livestream video taken Saturday shows a jogger, who the Chronicle notes appears to be the same man, knee-deep in the lake fishing items out. The man who lived in the park, identified by local station KPIX 5 as Greg Markson, had always kept his camp "tidy" and out of the way, she said.

Some of the homeless man's belongings wind up floating in the lake, which the jogger says was an "accident", but bystanders report seeing him dump them in the water. "I don't want to pollute the lake", he says.

No charges have been filed in the actual throwing of the homeless man's belongings into the lake. The subsequent video captures the man taking the video yelling "help me!" and "I'm being attacked!"

"What are you doing with this stuff, man?"

"What the f-k are you on", another witness chimes in in the background. "What the f*ck is the matter with you?" "You can't be doing this s-t".

"Hey man, that sh*t ain't cool", one of the bystanders is heard saying in the video.

She says Henry Sintay became known as "Jogger Joe" after the June 8th incident went viral. He denied throwing the homeless man's things in the lake the previous day.

He said: "I didn't know what was going on at first". The jogger than proceeds to take some of the clothes and put it in the trash before he jogged away. "His s-t, anyone's s-t, it's trash".

As Nelson and others ask Sintay questions, the jogger steps forward and snatches the cellphone Nelson was using to film the interaction.

"The audacity, the lack of compassion for another human being, the greater context of where we are as a society", said JJ Harris, who recorded the incident. Officers said that couldn't do much about Drew's stuff, however, because it was considered "debris".

The California man has since teamed up with Kenzie Smith, who made headlines last month after Jennifer "BBQ Becky" Schult called the cops on him and his friends for grilling at the same Oakland park. The pair have launched a GoFund Me campaign to raise money to replace Drew's belongings, including food, clothing and shoes.

So far, the page has collected over $6,000 in donations.
