Kim Jong-un takes selfie with Singapore Foreign Minister during tour

President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un came together for a momentous summit Tuesday that could determine historic peace or raise the specter of a growing nuclear threat, with Trump pledging that "working together we will get it taken care of".

The summit, the first ever between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader, is a moment that Trump has had in mind for at least a year.

Mr Trump has announced the restoration of U.S. sanctions, while European leaders are trying to preserve the deal.

DPRK is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the formal name of North Korea. "They invaded our country and massacred us", said the farmer, named Yun Myong Gum.

Trump sidestepped his public praise for an autocrat whose people have been oppressed for decades. "North Korea will compromise [on having] a non-aggression agreement with the US".

After an initial greeting in view of the media, the leaders will meet privately, then be joined by top aides for an expanded meeting followed by a working lunch, according to a White House statement. But Moon has to be present when and if such a document is signed.

North Korea should be asked to rejoin the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty which it left in 1994, and should be obliged to join the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, even though the United States is not itself a member, he said. "But they did [on Monday]", the source said, forecasting that the Singapore summit is likely to be declared a "success".

As the hours count down to the Tuesday morning meeting, here's a look at what happened in Singapore and the Koreas on Monday.

The U.N. World Food Programme says a quarter of North Korean children under five, who attend nurseries that it supports, suffer from chronic malnutrition.

After concluding the summit, Trump planned to speak to reporters in Singapore before flying home, the White House said.

This would require a fundamental change in the nature of America's relations with North Korea and a move away from the system of division and confrontation within which the United States has dealt with Korea since the two Korean regimes were founded in 1948.

Some prominent Americans have gradually begun to see it this way as well. It is also Kim's longest overseas visit as a leader. As they entered, Trump injected some levity to the day's extraordinary events, saying: "Getting a good picture everybody?" For Kim, one of the chief tasks from the summit - a legitimizing photo-op with a US president - is now all but guaranteed.

On Sunday night, hours after Kim and his delegation arrived in Singapore, Reuters reporters saw North Korean officials, some wearing pin badges of their leaders, ordering $100-plus-per-person dinners at the hotel's high-end Chinese restaurant.

"The underlying driver is a transformational process of Kim Jong-un leading North Korea into a new place in the region and the world", said John Delury, a professor of Chinese studies at Yonsei University in Seoul.

Trump responded to such commentary on Twitter, saying: "The fact that I am having a meeting is a major loss for the USA, say the haters & losers".

A South Korean parliamentary source said negotiators from both countries "were debating over whether to put [the term] CVID" in the joint communique to be released after the summit.

Although gaps remain over what denuclearisation would entail, Mr Trump sounded a positive note in a lunch meeting with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Trump left that summit early and, as he flew to Singapore, tweeted that he was yanking the USA out of the group's traditional closing statement.

While advisers say Trump has been reviewing briefing materials, the president insists his gut instincts will matter most when he gets in the room with Kim. The characteristic displays of pique were a potential distraction from the summit that Trump has hoped to make a legacy-defining moment and that aides and political allies have seen as a welcome break from the Russian Federation investigation and other domestic woes. U.S. officials scheduled to take part in Tuesday's expanded meeting will include Pompeo, Chief of Staff John Kelly, and National Security Adviser John Bolton.

Kim has sought to overhaul his image this year in a bid to ease global sanctions imposed after he tested nuclear bombs and long-range ballistic missiles.
