Malware Hijacks Amazon Devices to Mine Cryptocurrency

Yesterday, we saw a wealth of reports highlighting that a number of Amazon Fire products have been hacked by cryptocurrency mining malware, created to utilise the hardware processing power to authenticate transactions on the blockchain.

Once infected, all of the Fire device's resources will be used for cryptocurrency mining.

As it stands, only Amazon Fire devices that have been set to enable ADB Debugging and application downloads from external/unknown sources will have been affected by this. Once on a Kodi box it mines the Monero cryptocurrency and spreads to other vulnerable devices on the same network. The feature, Android Debug Bridge, can let a developer communicate and remotely execute commands over the device, without any authentication.

However, some users activate ADB in order to be able to sideload apps – that are not available in the Google Play Store – on their device.

Why it matters: While their low price helps make them a popular product, a number of people buy Amazon Fire TVs or Fire TV sticks so they can install streaming apps that allow them to watch pirated content.

- ”During research for this article, weve found everything from tankers in the United States to DVRs in Hong Kong to mobile telephones in South Korea. "As an example, a specific Android TV device was also found to ship in this condition".

The good news is anyone who stayed well away from the Fire TV's developer options is completely safe from the virus.

Is your device infected? Still, it might be worth keeping an eye out for symptoms such as sluggish performance.

An alternative would be downloading Total Commander from the Amazon App Store, and use the app to uninstall the malware, but there's no telling if the malware leaves anything else behind.

It has been reported that instances of mining virus malware infection are up 4000% this year and blackhats are infecting everything internet capable to increase their fortunes. We have not been able to confirm details for Android TV.

If you think you are infected AFTVnews.com has a great guide on how to see if you have the malware and a full guide on how to remove it HERE.

According to the thread, the most effective way to eliminate the malware is to restore factory settings on your device. It spread to more than 5000 devices within the first 24 hours.
