Manchester United hope to sign Toby Alderweireld within days

Toby or not Toby, that is the question Manchester United fans are wondering as conflicting rumours emerged about the possibility of Toby Alderweireld becoming a Red Devil.

According to the Sun, Jose Mourinho wants to complete the signing of Alderweireld before the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation starts on Thursday (June 14).

Last week United announced they had reached an agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk for the transfer of Fred, whose full name is Frederico Rodrigues de Paula Santos, and that "a further announcement will be made in due course".

United have been strongly linked with a move for Toby Alderweireld but TeamTalk claim the Red Devils are refusing to meet Tottenham's £70m asking price having made it clear they won't go above £55m for the Belgian worldwide so Mourinho has drawn-up a list of alternatives.

The Red Devils are looking to sign at least three more players this summer window after reportedly pinpointing the positions they Mourinho feels needs strengthening.

However, a report from the Manchester Evening News claims that Alderweireld isn't Mourinho's number one target despite negotiations starting with Spurs.

Whoever United do end up signing, the MEN says that there will definitely be one centre-back leaving the club in the coming weeks with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo all possible departures. According to the Daily Express United "are in pole position to sign Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford".

United are understood to be paying a fee in excess of £50m to secure the 25-year-old's signature.
