Mom warns parents of tick dangers after daughter left paralyzed

"She would try to stand and walk but would continue to fall so I thought her legs were just asleep".

The girl's mother, Jessica Griffin, first noticed something was wrong last Wednesday morning (June 6), when her daughter Kailyn had trouble getting up to go to daycare.

Kailyn was left struggling to walk after being bitten by a tick.

"After tons of blood work and a CT of the head [doctors have] ruled it as tick paralysis!"

Griffin said she rushed her daughter to the hospital where doctors diagnosed her with tick paralysis. Later that evening, Kailin was able to walk out of the hospital. It's more common in children than it is adults!

"Scary is a UNDERSTATEMENT!"

Tick paralysis is a rare disease that's thought to be caused by a toxin in tick saliva, according to a 2006 report on the condition from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). "She has been such a champ throughout this whole ordeal".

Symptoms can take up to seven days to develop. Symptoms normally disappear when the tick is completely removed.

"I went to brush her hair to put it in a ponytail and noticed she could barely talk and when I pulled her hair back that's when I seen the tick", she added. According to the American Lyme Disease Foundation, tick paralysis occurs when an engorged, egg-laden female tick transmits a neurotoxin to its host.

To protect yourself from tick bites, stay on the trail, wear light-coloured clothing and wear an insect repellant containing DEET or icaridin. "Doing thorough and complete tick checks is the way to prevent this infection", Lindsay said. PLEASE for the love of god check your kids for ticks!
