MTV is making a live-action ‘Aeon Flux’ reboot

The live-action series is set in a future dystopian state and revolves around a young assassin who teams with a group of biohacking rebels to save humanity as she becomes the hero known as Aeon Flux.

Aeon Flux will, once again, be infiltrating the programming lineup of MTV! A year later, in 1992, Aeon Flux circled back around for five short-form episodes. The show was created by animator Peter Chung, and is set in the year 7698, in the aftermath of a global environmental crisis that wiped out almost the entire planet, except for two border cities in what was previously referred to as Eastern Europe.

It will be interesting to see if Aeon Flux can (finally) work in a live-action capacity, especially with the 2005 dud of a movie serving ignominiously as the only attempt.

Jeff Davis (Teen Wolf) is the showrunner and is set to write the script and executive produce alongside Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead).

Aeon Flux, created by Korean animator Peter Chung, launched back in 1991 as a segment of MTV's avant-garde animation showcase, Liquid Television. It wasn't until 1995 that a ten-episode half hour long animated series was released. Can a live-action show pull that off, or will it have to go in another direction entirely?

The less said about the feature film Aeon Flux, the better. The animated Aeon Flux series was well liked by critics and fans, and Davis' Teen Wolf was widely beloved by MTV audiences throughout its six season run on the cable network. That film, which also starred Frances McDormand as Handler, Jonny Lee Miller as Oren Goodchild and Sophie Okenedo as Sithandra, earned just $25.8 million domestically and $52.3 million worldwide, from a $62 million budget.

Hopefully, this new series can match reverse that negative reaction. We'll find out as MTV moves forward on the show. Perhaps Davis could bring his skill with balancing rich characters with the more unbelievable aspects of a fantasy series to Aeon Flux.
