Nashville leaders react to news of North America's 2026 World Cup

The United 2026 joint bid from the United States, Canada and Mexico has won the right to host the 2026 Fifa World Cup after Fifa's member associations met at the Fifa Congress in Moscow ahead of the kick-off of Russian Federation 2018. Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal are in the running to be among the 16 host cities. With M&T Bank Stadium's $120 million renovation set to be completed by next fall, city officials will have two years to address issues both technical and otherwise.

A successful joint North America bid will see the global sports event return to the USA for the first time since 1994. Their efforts paid off. Thirty-three of 46 AFC member nations voted for the United Bid on Wednesday, with one member (Iran) not voting for either bid.

"You look at the assets we've got in England, or the United Kingdom, in terms of grounds: some of the best grounds in world football, the best training grounds".

"Will the fans need to jump over or take that secret tunnel under wall between US and Mexico in world cup 2026?" a posting by @footballmood asked rhetorically.

Soccer fans are invited to celebrate the big announcement with a beer on Sporting KC, No Other Pub and Anheuser-Busch from 5:30-6:30 p.m.at No Other Pub in the Power and Light District.

On Wednesday, FIFA member countries voted 134-65 for the three nations over the other candidate, Morocco.

When Qatar won the 2022 bid in controversial fashion in 2010, it seemed like having the World Cup return to the United States would be impossible but the 2026 bid was first rate and combining Canada and Mexico was convincing.

Calgary's Owen Hargreaves wore England's colours during the World Cup in 2002 and 2006.

According to U.S. Soccer, Canada and Mexico are each slated to host 10 matches, while the United States will host 60. Hasseltine said. "We want to make sure the legacy lives forever and lives long beyond the games' being here". We've landed a World Cup.

Canada and Mexico have already named its three host cities.

Martinez, who now plays in a high school-level training program in Edmonton, also has World Cup fever, but he's not sure whether he'd prefer to play for Canada or Mexico.

When Canada finally gets to that day eight years from now, we'll all be able to point to this year, 2018, as the one that changed everything for Canadian soccer.

Field dimensions smaller than FIFA's standard for World Cup matches, Catlett said, were the chief obstacles.

President Trump tweeted his congratulations to those involved in winning the right to host the competition.
