President Trump fires back at Robert De Niro after Tony Awards rant

De Niro, one of the most respected American actors, twice used the so-called F-Bomb against Trump on Sunday, prompting loud applause from the audience of theatre actors, directors and producers at Radio City Music Hall. Without any preamble, he said, "I'm gonna say one thing: F-- Trump".

De Niro has been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, and played the special counsel Robert Mueller on "Saturday Night Live".

De Niro apologized Monday - but on America's behalf to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom Trump ripped Saturday as "very dishonest and weak" after the USA refused to sign the joint communique from global leaders attending the Group of Seven summit in Quebec.

With both men septuagenarians a meeting in the ring is unlikely, but you can expect this feud to run and run.

Others recalled De Niro's famous remark from the movie.

Always claiming moral high ground, the media demonized "brash" Trump for his 2005 "locker room talk" yet found De Niro's schoolyard insults of the president worthy of thoughtful consideration as political commentary. I watched him last night and truly believe he may be "punch-drunk, '" Trump tweeted.

De Niro, who has spoken out against Trump on numerous occasions, famously acted as boxer Jake LaMotta in the 1981 movie Raging Bull, winning an Academy Award for Best Actor.

The rebuttal comes after the 74-year-old Goodfellas actor expressed his feelings towards Trump while introducing a performance by his pal Bruce Springsteen at the awards show.

While Trump's clapback is not out of the norm for him, Twitter is furious.

The actor went on to say that as long as America's "leadership is so appalling and so corrupt" he'll be "speaking out at every turn".

"After De Niro, CBS told us to do something drastic, so here we are", Groban joked.

De Niro apologized for Trump's "idiotic behavior" while in Toronto on Monday and said his actions were "a disgrace".
