Proposal To Split California Qualifies For Ballot

The Secretary of State's office reports that enough valid signatures have been collected to put the measure on the ballot.

Splitting California into three states would require congressional approval.

California governments would be served by three smaller state governments.

Northern Californians looking to run away from Sacramento and San Francisco to join the state of Jefferson will be severely disappointed as the proposal draws the line for Northern California all the way past the current state capital.

Southern California: This would have 12 counties: San Diego, San Bernadino, Orange, Riverside, Mono, Madera, Inyo, Tulare, Fresno, Kings, Kern, and Imperial counties.

California, which would be made up of Los Angeles, Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

If the plan was approved by the voters, it would need to be approved by both houses of the California legislature, an unlikely prospect.

If the unlikely plan is successful, it would be the first time an existing USA state split since West Virginia was created in 1863.

California gets 55 electors in the Electoral College - a powerful number that has been a huge unmovable bloc for the Democratic candidate.

Under the proposal, each state would have about one-third of the state population.

A California split is a long shot, to say the least.

But there's many reasons to be skeptical that voters will choose to split the state.

This will not be the first time such a ballot would take place.

Last year, an effort dubbed Calexit sought to bring the question of whether California should secede from the United States to this year's ballot.

Draper says the spilt would create three separate governments, boost education and infrastructure, and lower taxes, but critics claim it could do more harm than good.

Steve Maviglio, a consultant and critic of Draper's efforts, charged that the plan would lead to "political chaos", charging that it would cost each of the new states millions, the Chronicle said.
