Saudi Arabia to host Gulf conference on supporting Jordan

Three Gulf Arab states pledged $2.5 billion in aid to Jordan on Monday in an effort to stabilize the USA -allied kingdom as it faces its worst protests in years over government austerity plans that include tax increases.

The package, announced at a summit of the four nations in the holy city of Mecca, will include a deposit in the Jordanian central bank, World Bank guarantees, budgetary support over five years and financing for development projects, SPA said.

A few days after protests erupted on the streets of Amman, King Salman called Jordan's King Abdullah, Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed.

The EU has provided Jordan with €1 billion in aid over three years, Mogherini said.

A statement early Saturday on the state-run Saudi Press Agency said the meeting would "discuss means of supporting Jordan to overcome its current crisis".

In December 2011, the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council that is headquartered in Saudi Arabia pledged to give $2.5 billion in aid each to Jordan and Morocco, both of which had been invited to join the regional group that year.

The protests forced Jordanian Prime Minister Hani Mulki to resign on June 4.

Separately on Sunday, the European Union's foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, visited Jordan and announced €20 million for social protection programs for vulnerable Jordanians.

Mass rallies have hit Jordan since May 30, after the government proposed a set of economic reforms, involving price hikes and increased taxes to bring down the country's debt level in line with the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) requirements.

An unpopular income tax law was also incensing the public until the government withdrew it in the face of the protests.

Officials say the kingdom's economic strains have worsened with the end of the Gulf grant and little extra funds by Western donors in the last few years to cope with the burden of thousands of Syrian refugees the kingdom hosts.

Jordan blames its economic woes on instability rocking the region and the burden of hosting hundreds of thousands of refugees from war-torn Syria, complaining it has not received enough global support.
