Telltale is working on a Stranger Things game

This project, however, won't release on Netflix to stream (at least for the time being) and is instead being worked on as proper Telltale experience that we've grown accustomed to. Players will be able to control the game with any remote control device equipped with directional and select buttons, which will allow them to select dialogue options.

In a statement, Telltale said it was "delighted by the response" to the idea of Minecraft: Story Mode coming to Netflix in the fall as an "interactive adventure". According to a breaking report by TechRadar, a pilot program is set to begin with Telltale's Minecraft: Story Mode. It is more high-profile than the titles that precede it there, thanks entirely to the Telltale connection.

After having worked on titles based around series far and wide involving major franchises like The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and more, Telltale Games has given a new look into what lies ahead for the studio outside of its current projects, and it looks like things are about to get unusual.

Update (06/13) at 3:26 p.m. CT: Netflix has reached out to Android Authority to clarify a few points on the story.

"There's a broad spectrum of entertainment available today", a Netflix rep said. "Games have become increasingly cinematic, but we view this as interactive narrative storytelling on our service", they explained. No running, jumping, shooting, or climbing that would necessitate an actual video game controller. It is even possible that Netflix will announce the streaming game service and the new Stranger Things title all at once. But that approach also places limits on the types of games it can support (i.e. don't expect a Call of Duty: Netflix Edition) - which, as we now know, is by design.

While the projects being developed with Telltale Games might technically be considered games, that choice of partners is telling, given that the Telltale Games format is actually a lot closer to a choose-your-own-adventure narrative than a traditional shoot-'em-up.

The technology site TechRadar was the first to report the collaboration. It's going to happen, and probably sooner than you think, but Netflix has no apparent intention of diving into that space.

Insiders also report the company is likely to launch titles based on Netflix's original content.
