The Raptors Have Found Their Next Head Coach

The Raptors Have Found Their Next Head Coach

The Toronto Raptors are hiring assistant Nick Nurse to become the franchise's new head coach, league sources told ESPN. Wojnarowski reports that Nurse accepted the job on Tuesday morning. Nurse would probably have to be considered the front-runner of the group, given his track record and how the offense shifted and held up in the playoffs, but it's always hard to ascribe credit and blame across a coaching staff.

Nurse, 50, replaces Dwane Casey who was sacked last month after the Raptors were swept in the conference semifinals by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Nurse has been an assistant with Toronto since the 2013 season. He spent more than a decade in Europe, was an assistant coach for Britain at the 2012 London Olympics, is a past G League coach of the year and coached Rio Grande to that league's title in 2013. He also won two rings at the minor-league level.

Ujiri called the decision to fire Casey "difficult but necessary" following the Raptors' loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round, the third time in as many years they've been eliminated at the hands of LeBron James and the Cavs.

The short version of that: Hiring internally is unsexy, but most signals point to Nurse being a legitimately good candidate as an National Basketball Association head coach. He is the franchise's all-time leader in wins, winning percentage, games coached and playoff games coached (51).
