Toddlers In US Eating Too Much Sugar — CDC

Another serious situation shapes up in the USA, as a recent study carried out by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) revealed an increasingly higher added sugar consumption in toddlers.

The study found that toddlers 12 to 18 months consumed 5.5 teaspoons per day, and that toddlers 19 to 23 months consumed 7.1 teaspoons.

The study comes at a time when one in six children and adolescents in the USA are obese. It has been linked to higher rates of obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure, along with dental cavities.

But the earlier sugar intake begins, the harder the habit becomes to kick later in life.

Herrick said the findings could have implications for the upcoming revision of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

The study is expected to be presented at the American Society for Nutrition annual meeting during Nutrition 2018. They do not include naturally occurring sugars such as those found in fruits, vegetables, and milk.

Children, particularly toddlers, who consume sugary foods are much more likely to make poor diet choices later in life.

Kirsten Herrick, a nutritional epidemiologist at the CDC, examined 24-hour food consumption patterns of a nationally representative sample including more than 800 infants and toddlers aged 6 to 23 months old. The measured amount of extra sugar reportedly consumed by the children in the study was based entirely on the parent's memory.

The added sugar included cane sugar, high-fructose corn syrup and honey. By 19 to 23 months, 99% of children ate an average of over seven teaspoons of added sugar on a given day.

The government does not have guidelines for daily recommended limits for added sugar for children under the age of two. According to the CDC children under the age of 2 should not get added sugar at all.

No guidelines are given for children under age 2, but the 2020-2025 edition edition is expected to include recommendations. An apple, for example, contains natural sugar as well as good fiber and nutrients.

Most toddlers in the USA eat more sugar every day than is recommended for adults, according to a study. Previous research suggests most Americans exceed those limits. As for children under the age of 2, it is recommended that they avoid eating foods containing added sugar altogether.

In the future, researchers will investigate the specific foods children consume their added sugar. However, the scientists behind the study are now planning on analyzing the products with added sugar that kids usually consume.

How can people reduce their intake of added sugars?

The team plans to further investigate the data, including examining trends over time.

"The AHA recommends reading ingredients" nutritional labels carefully, since "sugar has many other names". In addition, the study has not been peer-reviewed. The problem will be even bigger as they will get older, a new study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control concludes.
